Holland America Line

This photologue material was compiled in Oosterdam's inaugural season in both Europe and the United States.  The Oosterdam has traveled a wide variety of itineraries in her first year of service and proven her adaptability.  I have compiled an article on just this subject and it can be viewed here.

Accents throughout ms Oosterdam
  osdm_199.jpg (56851 bytes)   Copies of VOC (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie) pennies that were involved in Dutch trade in Asia.  Copies of these pennies are found throughout the midships staircase.
  osdm_25.jpg (43955 bytes)   In addition to there being ample time pieces throughout the ship, elegant clocks such as this are also displayed for accent.
  osdm1203_36.jpg (58884 bytes)   The forward staircase is home to a collection of fourteen Nagasaki prints.  The development of these Japanese prints are aligned with the Tokugawa or Edo period from 1603 to 1867.

Various garden statues are displayed throughout the ship depicting The Four Seasons.

  As with other Holland America Line ships, Oosterdam guests are treated to the use of cloth towels in the public restrooms.

 

Main Deck
  osdm1203_53.jpg (60985 bytes)   One can find fresh flowers in even the most intimate of spaces.  Such is an example located adjacent to the Atrium Bar.

The Atrium

The Vista Dining Room

Artwork located throughout the Vista Dining Room is that of 'still life with fruits' by artists Stefan Bräuniger and Giuseppe Linardi.

Lower Promenade Deck
  osdm_141.jpg (35021 bytes)   The Asian theme is carried out tastefully in a number of capacities, including various Bonsai trees located outside of the Vista Dining Room.
osdm_110.jpg (57625 bytes) osdm1203_38.jpg (54417 bytes) osdm_111.jpg (51792 bytes) A traditional staple on all Holland America Line ships, the Explorers Lounge hosts a grand oil painting.  A quality that sets Dutch landscape paintings apart from those of other countries is the amount of space devoted to atmosphere, focusing on ocean air and glowing sun.
osdm_154.jpg (58527 bytes) osdm_155.jpg (63851 bytes) osdm_176.jpg (61192 bytes) There are a variety of smaller intimate seating areas in which guests can watch the sea or fellow guests.  Previous Holland America Line guests feel right at home in Oosterdam's Explorers Lounge given her consistent design and image.

  osdm_151.jpg (41014 bytes)   Oosterdam has a dedicated Art Gallery in which pieces are displayed and guests can preview works prior to auctions.
  osdm_152.jpg (58335 bytes)   The Art Gallery also displays elegant works for guests and staff.  Ornately lighted are two Indian hardwood architectural façades from the 18th and 19th century of Gujarat.

The Art Gallery also features a stunning copy of an Indian necklace from the 19th century.  The necklace features two amulets and they stand for fertility and power.

Proceeding forward on Lower Promenade Deck, guests will find the Queens Lounge outside of which features a bust of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.

  osdm_114.jpg (53128 bytes)   This sweeping corridor whisks guests from the Queen's Lounge foyer to the public areas that are located aft.  Lively paintings by Wil van der Laan accent this and other areas in the ship portraying elements of excitement, emotion, dynamics, and drama.
osdm1203_40.jpg (51978 bytes) osdm1203_41.jpg (33360 bytes) A unique aft entrance corridor into the Northern Lights Nightclub features lights that "follow" guests as they proceed.  A whimsical bouncing ball light also traces the path along the wall.

Also featured are photographs of Laurel and Hardy.
The photographs that are featured are from the 1964 compilation of "The Crazy World of Laurel & Hardy".

osdm_147.jpg (52120 bytes) osdm_118.jpg (62086 bytes) Located in the Casino is a whimsical Indian polychromed wood elephant.  The pachyderm figure is painted in muted tones of red, green, blue, yellow ochre, and black.  It rests on a platform mounted with wood wheels.
