oa10_108.jpg (97371 bytes) oa10_109.jpg (100622 bytes) Given that Oasis of the Seas was the largest ship in the World when she debuted in late 2009, her sheer statistics where overwhelming.  At 220,000 tons, the Oasis of the Seas was the largest cruise ship ever built until her sister ship, Allure of the Seas, came online.

Oasis of the Seas is powered by 6 Wärtsilä V12 diesel engines producing over ten thousand horsepower.  The engines are linked in to electrical generators that create a giant electrical generation plans.

Oasis of the Seas' main propulsion system consists of three independently controllable Azipods attached to the hull at her stern.  One Azipod consists of an electrically driven propeller mounted on a steerable pod, which can rotate 360 degrees.  This provides the ship with the ultimate control in direction and thrust.  Forward of the hull on Oasis of the Seas, there are four bow thrusters that generate over 30,000 horse power that allow the ship to turn port or starboard without requiring any forward motion.

The keel laying of Oasis of the Seas took place on 12 November, 2007.  It is a significant moment for any ship when the keel is laid and certain was for the to be largest ship in the World.  The keel laying is when the proverbial backbone of the ship - a beam running the length of the ship - is put into place.  During the ceremony, coins are placed beneath the keel and they are removed when the ship is floated out.  They are then kept on board for good luck.  Guests may view the coins on deck 14 by proceeding from the forward lobby, walking along the port side stateroom corridor, and exiting via the glazed door.  The coins are within a small box attached to the mast by the railings at the front of the deck.

At the time of this publication, Oasis of the Seas and her sister ship Allure of the Seas, are the largest ships in the World.  At that time, Royal Caribbean International had no plans to design future ships of their magnitude.
