Lower Promenade Deck
Located completely forward on Lower Promenade Deck is the Vista Lounge.  Located outside of, and in the vicinity of, the entrance of the Vista Lounge are both a stone Welsh Talbot vase and another vase with two guilded eco-deco columns by Lebigre and Roger.

The Vista Lounge seats 867 guests and generally does so in two show times.  Most times there is an early show performance for the earlier dining times and then also a later.  Depending upon the evening's programming, the later sittings may see their show before dinner.

Located just within the entrance of the Vista Lounge on Lower Promenade Deck is a figure of an Odalesque copy of a cast iron sculpture originally from France, mid 19th century by Artiprex of the Netherlands, 2001.

The architecture and design of the Vista Lounge and the accompanying stage has allowed Holland America Line to bring entertainment to a new level in terms of production shows.

A variety of other activities take place in the Vista Lounge such as Bingo, the Captain's Cocktail party, and other presentations.  Nestled within the lounge are works of art by Lebigre & Roger such as a human figure of a woman knitting on the port side and a workman on the starboard side.

Proceeding aft on Lower Promenade Deck outside of the Vista Lounge, guests will find the Piano Bar.  The Piano Bar seats 70 guests and is a trademark venue on most all Holland America Line ships and guests enjoy sitting around the piano for sing alongs or to just relax and listen.

The paintings located within the Piano Bar, 'Sailors in a Humorous Activity'  are of Hans Leijerzapf of the Netherlands.  His work is amusic and obstinate and he has a refined sense for the typical scenes.  They are often based on daily life and comment in a humorous way, trying to provoke the spectator.

Adjacent to the Piano Bar is the Sports Bar, with a capacity of 42 guests.  Guests here can enjoy beverages while catching telecasted events on televisions located throughout.  Perhaps the most eye-catching feature of the Sports Bar is 'Humoristic Sports Figures' by Jan Snoeck of the Netherlands.

Parallel to both the Sports and Piano Bars is the ship's Casino.  Guests will find standard gaming equipment, which is also scheduled for upgrades upon entering dry dock in the Spring of 2008.

Overseeing activity of the Casino is 'Neptune', a statue made in bronze with a value of € 4,875.  The sculpture shows Neptune struggling with a sea creature.  In classical mythology, Neptune is the god who ruled the sea and its inhabitants.  Sailors evoked him to ensure a safe voyage, though when roused to anger he would cause storms and shipwrecks.

Tucked within the Casino is the entrance to 'Northern Lights', the Zuiderdam's discotheque.  An entrance is also located farther aft on this deck behind the Queens Lounge.  That entrance features various posters, such as those of 20th Century Fox, The Republic Studio, and the MGM Studio.

The Queens Lounge and Culinary Arts Center is located amidships.  The entrance of the Queens Lounge features a cast bronze bust of H.M. Queen Beatrix, Queen of the Netherlands, by Dutch artist Martha Waijop.

The original concept of the Queens Lounge was to serve as Zuiderdam's movie theatre and alternative lounge.  With the evolution of 'Signature of Excellence', however, she now also hosts the Culinary Arts Center.

In the Culinary Arts Center, guests may watch cooking demonstrations by top name chefs or even participate in a cooking class for a nominal fee.  There is a continuously updated list of featured chefs on the Holland America Line Internet site.

Along the lines of culinary delights, encompassing the Atrium on this deck is the Pinnacle Grill which seats 130 guests.  The Pinnacle Grill offers an extended level of elegance where fittings such as Bvlgari ® china, Riedel ® stemware, and Frette ® linens enhance the dining experience.

This is an exquisite dining venue which is perfect for celebrations or a romantic dinner for two.  Specialties of the Pinnacle Grill include aged Sterling Silver Beef, fresh seafood of the Pacific Northwest, and an extensive world-class wine list.

Reservations are required and available on a first come, first serve basis.  It is recommended to make a reservation as soon as possible when on board or to place an order via the Holland America Line ship services department.

When Zuiderdam departs dry dock in Palermo Italy in the Spring of 2008, the Pinnacle Bar will be located across from the Pinnacle Grill and provide a classy setting for enjoying fine wines.   This area was originally designed as the Windstar Café.

Proceeding aft on Lower Promenade Deck, guests will pass through the art gallery which displays a highly impressive collection of an Amphitride figure in carnaval costume, Arlequin and Colombine figures in carnaval costumes, and a Neptune figure in carnaval costume.

Artwork on the floor also includes that of 'Reflections in Water' which is a photograph of the Ca' d'Oro in Venice by Stefano Baroni.  There are also statues of the Venetian doge.  A doge (which means leader or commander) was once the highest magistrate in the former republics of Venice and Genoa.

The art gallery gracefully leads guests to the Explorer's Lounge.  The Explorer's Lounge is another trademark venue among the ships of Holland America Line.  Here, guests sit among classical artwork and fittings while listening to a string trio. zu13.jpg (54015 bytes) zu14.jpg (59560 bytes)
The dominant work of art in the Explorer's Lounge is 'The Venetian Harbor' by Fred Arends of the Netherlands.  The artist's forté is translating paintings from the Dutch romantic period into a contemporary execution.  With the activity of the foreground, works such as repoussoir attracts the viewer's gaze to the famous San Giorgio Maggiore church. zu15.jpg (58121 bytes) zu181.jpg (53057 bytes)
